Temperatures today will run a few degrees below average after the cold front worked across the state last night. Winds will be lighter this afternoon as a ridge of high pressure starts to build in. That ridge will help temperatures rebound on Thursday before another cold front pushes through.

The next cold front will give the northeast a shot at a few more showers Thursday night and the metro another round of gusty canyon winds late Thursday into early Friday. Expect another cool down Friday before temperatures rebound again over the weekend.

Some moisture could work into the state over the weekend, helping to touch off a few showers and storms Saturday. Drier air works into the state from the west Sunday, allowing for more sunshine.

A storm system early this week will bring snow chances to north, west and central New Mexico with a strong east canyon wind into the metro.

Most of New Mexico will remain quiet and mild Monday, but a strong, slow moving backdoor cold front will make its way across eastern New Mexico. Light snow will start over the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in the afternoon, increasing in intensity through the evening. The cold front will squeeze through the canyons in the central mountain chain bringing strong winds into the Rio Grande Valley. 60 mph wind gusts will be possible in the Albuquerque area Monday night through Tuesday. Snow will increase in coverage and intensity across northern, western and central New Mexico. The heaviest snowfall will be from Monday night through Tuesday afternoon. Winds will play a big factor in Albuquerque snow chance early Tuesday morning.

Quiet end to the weekend ahead of an active week

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) - Quiet weather continues to finish out the weekend, but an active week of weather is ahead for New Mexico.

Temperatures remain above average across New Mexico Sunday with the return of breezy conditions in the afternoon under sunny skies. The relatively quiet weather continues for most into Monday, but a strong backdoor cold front begins to move into New Mexico by the afternoon. Snow will begin to develop across the northern mountains and pick up in intensity overnight and into Tuesday as the cold front pushes south. Very strong gap winds will develop with gusts up to 60 mph possible in Albuquerque early Tuesday morning. Snow will be possible across the mountains of New Mexico Tuesday, some of which will be heavy at times, with rain chances into southern New Mexico.
