ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – City officials held a news conference at Morningside Park Tuesday to talk about how to reduce speeding fatalities. During Tuesday’s news conference, officials say they are seeking public input on placing multilingual signs near specific locations, identifying appropriate ticketing thresholds, having all citations reviewed by an officer, and giving speeders the option of paying the ticket or completing community service.
According to a news release, traffic crashes in Albuquerque have increased. It also states pedestrian fatalities have increased since 2010.
In an effort to improve traffic safety, the city created Vision Zero in 2019. Last month, the city unveiled a new action plan, Vision Zero ABQ 2040, which includes roadway design improvements, lowering speeds, and more education. The plan strives to have no roadway fatalities and injuries by 2040.
The action plan focuses on the following six goals in the City’s commitment to traffic safety:
- Engineering & design
- Safe speeds
- Policy, regulation & practice
- Education & encouragement
- Walking & rolling
- Data & transparency

Community members can email speeding@cabq.gov to provide input on opportunities to participate. The City will also publish a community input form for the program.
