LAS CRUCES, N.M. (KRQE) – New Mexico Sen. Martin Heinrich spent the last two days in to get an up-close look at the issues at the border.
Friday, the Democrat toured the Las Cruces Border Patrol Station before heading to a shelter for asylum seekers. He has called the Trump Administration’s immigration policies inhumane and opposes defunding military projects in New Mexico to pay for a border wall. He says most asylum seekers need help because they’re fleeing dire situations.
“It takes a lot of guts to rip your family out of the only place you’ve ever known, and walk and hitchhike and jump on a train if you can, and come thousands of miles knowing you may not get to stay,” Sen. Heinrich said.
Heinrich said federal money would be better served in communities that provide humanitarian relief.
