St. Pius baseball will play early to beat the weather

Top-seeded St. Pius X Baseball had a wrench thrown into the works, pertaining to their 2019 State Baseball Tournament first-round game, as they were supposed to play 12-Bloomfield on Friday. That Class 4A game was changed to a doubleheader on Thursday starting at 1:30 p.m, due to the inclement weather that is headed towards New Mexico.

“I think we are still pretty prepared…and have been practicing pretty hard the past couple of days, and I think even with the change we will be alright,” said St. Pius pitcher, Hayden Walker.

This team is confident no matter what is thrown their way, as they are currently riding a 10 game winning streak and trust each other no matter what.

“When you are the top-seed, I think it always adds a little pressure, but we don’t apply any more than we usually do on ourselves. I feel 100% confident in everybody that is on the field 100% of the time, and that is a special feeling when you are trying to win a state championship,” said St. Pius X SS, Grant Smith.

The Sartans haven’t won a state title since 2013, but they feel they have the pitching, the hitting, and all the tools to win the title. Seven seniors on this roster are also adding fuel to their state title fire heading into this tournament.

“I have been wanting one my entire high school career, but not only for myself, but for the entire team. It would just really mean a lot to all of us and especially the seniors to go out on top,” said Grant Smith.
