Overtime makes a stop at the NMAA State Basketball Tournament

Overtime was a part of the action as the NMAA State Basketball Tournament went into the semifinals. The latest game on the schedule brought the boys Class 6A top seed Eldorado together with the 7 seed, Cleveland Storm. It was a game that avoided overtime, but had a controversial finish. With the game tied at 68 Cleveland took a shot as the clock expired to end the game.

There was some question to whether the ball left the players hand before the red light, signaling the end of the game, came on. Game officials called it good and Cleveland walked away with a 70-68 victory and spot in the championship game where they will meet Atrisco Heritage.

Cleveland forced Eldorado into a string of turnovers towards the end of the game, giving them a chance to win. It is the same thing they did to defending 6A champion Volcano Vista in the quarterfinals. Atrisco Heritage advanced to the Class 6A title game by outlasting the two seed, Las Cruces 50-46 in double overtime. Joziah Ramos had 21 points in the win.

Jordan Arroyo scored 11 points. The top seed in Class 5A also played an overtime game. Espanola Valley defeated Artesia 63-59 despite 23 points and 13 boards from Bulldogs star Joe Willingham. Espanola Valley will play Belen in the championship game. The Eagles earned a spot to the final for the first time since 1985 by stopping rival Los Lunas 50-41. Garrett Gallegos had 23 points to help the Eagles secure the win.
