ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Before the New Mexico United game against El Paso Locomotive Saturday night, United Owner and President Peter Trevisani and Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller announced an upcoming multi-use stadium bond issue will be presented to the Albuquerque City Council at the August 2 meeting. A vote is expected later that month. “This isn’t a stadium for the state, it’s not a stadium for the city, it’s not stadium for United, it’s a stadium for you,” said Trevisani.
The announcement comes a day after the city released the results of a feasibility study that shows the stadium could be downtown with the preferred sites at Coal and Broadway or 2nd and Iron. The other sites under consideration are the Railyards and 12th and I-40. The report estimates the project would cost between $64 and $70 million and the study recommends it should hold 10,000 to 12,000 seats. Fans told KRQE they don’t care where it’s located, but are thrilled for what could come.

“It’s been something that everyone’s been wanting from the beginning, so it’s really exciting. I know they’re looking at a few different sites all over town, but just driving around looking at those sites you can imagine the stadium right there and knowing hey my nights might be spent here,” said Alex Stillinger.

If approved, the stadium bond will go on the November ballot for Albuquerque voters. A press release states if the bond is approved by voters, taxes will not be raised. The funding will reportedly be added to the approximately $8 million previously raised by New Mexico United, state legislators, and the governor’s office as well as additional private funding that is to be determined.
