Oregon State faces Jeriah Horne-led Tulsa

The Tulsa Golden Hurricane will welcome surprise 2021 Elite Eight participant Oregon State to the Reynolds Center on Monday night for a non-conference game.

Both teams come in looking to rebound from losses.

Tulsa (1-1) gave up a 3-pointer with 23 seconds left Saturday in a 59-58 loss to Air Force, as the Golden Hurricane’s look at the buzzer fell short.

Oregon State (1-1) fell at Iowa State 60-50 on Friday.

For Tulsa, Jeriah Horne is receiving the praises of coach Frank Haith after he earned two letters in the Golden Hurricane program, then left for a season at Colorado, where he was a key player for the Buffs as they advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

He returned to Tulsa in the offseason.

“He’s a much better player than he was a couple of years ago, and he’s grown so much as a player and as a man,” Haith told the Tulsa World.

Horne scored 28 points in Tulsa’s 82-75 season-opening win over Northwestern State on Wednesday and finished with 15 points in the loss to Air Force.

Horne averaged 11.1 points per game for the Golden Hurricane in 2019-20, and 10.8 points a game last season for Oregon State’s Pac-12 Conference counterpart Colorado.

Horne scored a total of 32 points in three games against Oregon State a season ago, including six in the Pac-12 Tournament championship game that propelled the Beavers to the NCAA Tournament and on a remarkable run to the Elite Eight.

Oregon State opened the 2021-22 season with a 73-64 victory over Portland State on Tuesday as returning starter Warith Alatishe opened the campaign with 21 points and eight rebounds. Alatishe again led the team in scoring Friday, but finished with just eight points in the defeat in Ames, Iowa.

Beavers coach Wayne Tinkle said finding the right combinations among a new-look roster will be a priority in the early season.

“We’ve got so many pieces,” he said. “Some guys, it’s just not their night, which happens; then we’ve got to find somebody else (to score).”
