The mayor of Albuquerque will tackle a new project on Saturday night, literally, as Tim Keller will play for the Duke City Gladiators on Saturday night in their annual exhibition game.
“I am grateful for the opportunity and luckily Albuquerque has an amazing professional football team. I am excited to support everything that sports stand for in our city and also for fans. We want folks to get out and enjoy everything our city has to offer, especially our own Duke City Gladiators,” said Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller.
Keller will participate in a few plays for the Gladiators on Saturday at 6 p.m. at Tingley Coliseum. It was the mayor’s idea to strap on the pads and play for the professional indoor football team, and at first Head Coach Dominic Bramante was a little worried. His team will play a full-on game, and they are some big guys. The mayor could get hurt in the game, and also hurt players on the team before the regular season started, but after meeting Keller the coach’s feelings changed.
“When I found out the passion, he convinced me. The passion that he wanted to do this, I got excited. He will be quarterbacking for us on Saturday night,” said Gladiators Head Coach Dominic Bramante.
Keller played QB back in high school at St. Pius, and when you mix that experience with his career in politics he feels ready for the challenge ahead.
“The closest thing that I felt to playing quarterback was running the floor of the senate, it was actually very similar. So, I was the whip and it was almost exactly like that, things were moving super fast, everyone is coming at you, and you have to make quick decisions,” said Mayor Keller.
Keller is a huge fan of sports and even said that playing football gave him a lot of great tools for his life, with leadership being at the top. He believes that sports is a great outlet for kids and adults, and teamwork definitely pertains to his job now.
“You really realize in all sports, but especially football, you have each other’s back, you’re working on a game plan together, a strategy. It’s actually a good blueprint for running a city,” said Tim Keller.
The Gladiators, First Responders exhibition game featuring Tim Keller will take place on Saturday March 10, at Tingley Coliseum. Admission is free. To find out more, click here.
