Volcano Boys basketball ready to take advantage as No. 1 seed in Class 5A

The Volcano Vista Hawks will enter the 2019 state tournament in Class 5A with the number one seed.

“To be honest, we don’t get caught up in what seed we are,” said Hawks Head Coach Greg Brown. “We do appreciate being a top seed, but we’re focused on what we need to do.”

The Hawks finished the season with a 21-4 record. Second-seed Las Cruces finished the season with a perfect 28-0 record. Critics of the seeding believe Las Cruces should have been the number one seed, but playing in the tightly contested District 1 was more than likely a factor in the Hawks getting the nod for number one.

The Hawks had a lot of close calls this season, mostly in their tightly contested district one 5A where they won the league title.

“We’re thankful that we had our competition in our district to get us ready because most teams want see stuff like we did, the type of situations that we were in, next bucket wins the game, stuff like that,” said Hawks senior guard Jalontae Gray.

The Hawks will start postseason play Saturday when they host 16-seed Carlsbad in the first round of 16.
