Local Sports

For the second time in four years, New Mexico’s Joe Franklin is the winner of the Patrick Shane Award for Coach of the Year in women’s cross country in the Mountain Region.

“It’s a great honor, but those honors happen as a result of the women on the team,” said Franklin.

One of those women is sophomore Weini Kelati. The United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association also recognized her as the Women’s Athlete of the Year in the West Region.

The defending NCAA champion Lobos will try to pick up another title at the NCAA Championship in Madison, Wisconsin this weekend.
