The top seed in boys Class 5A basketball fell on semi finals Thursday. Volcano Vista got 16 points from Cesar Madrid in a 55-52 upset loss against Santa Fe. The Demons used pressure defense to turn the Hawks over. The Demons also used the power of the three-point shot. Cruz Martinez led the Demons with 10 points in the win.

The Demons will face last season’s big-school champion in the final game. The Atrisco Heritage Jaguars needed overtime to beat the Cleveland Storm 62-59. Joziah Ramos poured in 28 points for the win. The Storm got 21 points from Aamer Muhammed in a losing effort. In Class 4A Los Lunas punched their ticket to the title game by beating Del Norte 77-60.

The Tigers will now face the Valley Vikings in Saturday’s championship game. Valley defeated Silver 53-50. The top seed in girls Class 5A will play for a championship a second consecutive year. The Hobbs Eagles got a last-second bucket from Mariah Jennings to beat Carlsbad 42-41.

Amiah Smith had 19 points in the win. The Eagles will play the West Mesa Mustangs in the final. The Mustangs beat Piedra Vista 59-57 after losing to the Panthers three times during the regular season. Maiah Rivas scored 21 points to lead the Mustangs.
