St. Pius hopes football playoffs end like they did in 2016

Local Sports

The last time the St. Pius Sartans won a football championship was in 2016. The Sartans could find themselves holding the Class 4A title at the end of this season, but they will have to do it without their first string quarterback Derek Rivera.

Rivera suffered an injury with under three minutes to go in the Sartans quarterfinal win over Aztec last weekend.

“Am I worried? Yeah, I’m worried. We’ll be fine. We will figure it out. Our kids will play hard,” head coach David Montoya said when asked if he was worried.

Rivera accounted for over 17 hundred yards and 19 passing touchdowns this season. He also had an additional 13 rushing touchdowns. Receiver and linebacker Jacob McCoy will fill in for Rivera.

“It will definitely be a challenge, something different, but at the end of the day it’s just football,” said McCoy.”

St. Pius is the top seed and will face Bloomfield, a five seed, in the semifinals Saturday. Game time at Nusenda Community Stadium is 1 p.m.
