On the Sports Desk Thursday, New Mexico boxer Jason Sanchez gets news that he will fight for a world title. Sanchez will face WBO Featherweight Champion Oscar Valdez on June 8 in Reno, Nevada.
It will be the sixth title defense for Valdez, who is a two-time Olympian with a 25-0 record. Sanchez is 14-0. Sanchez upset Jean Carlos Rivera back in October for the WBO Youth Featherweight title.
Jackson and Wink Fight Night 5 is all set with all fighters weighing in on Thursday. Main event fighter Steve Garcia weighed in at 145 pounds. His opponent Andrew Whitney arrived late. Garcia will go into the fight with an 8-3 record. Whitney is 16-6.
“I just got to be cautious working him and putting pressure on him, but at the end of the day I think I can get it done on the feet, ” said Garcia. The first of 12 fights has a 7 p.m start time at Isleta Resort and Casino Friday.
Meanwhile, New Mexico United forward Kevaughn Frater is the USL Championship Player of the Month. Frater scored four goals in the month of April. Three of those goals came against Portland Timbers 2. New Mexico United is back in action Sunday in El Paso, Texas.
Next up, high school playoff baseball starts with the top seed in Class 5A getting a split. District 1 champions Volcano Vista won the first game in the best of three 7-0. Their opponent and 16 seed Alamogordo won game two 8-5 in an upset.
Volcano Vista committed seven errors in the loss. It sets up a decisive game three Saturday at noon at Volcano Vista. The winner moves on. In Class 4A, the top-seeded St. Pius Sartans hammered number 16 Bloomfield 11-0 in the best of three series.
Finally, Lobo women’s basketball is one of ten teams invited to the 2019 Women’s Cancun Challenge. The tournament will run during Thanksgiving weekend. The Lobos will start with Missouri on November 28. They will play West Virginia the following day.
