Sergio Rivas realized part of a dream Friday in Chicago. The former Seattle University and Cibola High star was selected by the San Jose Earthquakes in the second round of the MLS Super Draft. Rivas was the second pick of the round and 26th selection overall. Rivas attended the draft.
A few mock drafts had Rivas going in the top ten.
“I am always the underdog,” said Rivas.
Although he did not go in the first round, it couldn’t have worked out better for Rivas, who will be joined with the coach he wanted.
“Amazing fit,” said Rivas. “I mean the Coach Almedya. I talked about him. He was coaching at Chivas and he speaks very highly of Mexican players and he loves the international players. That’s somewhere I can definitely thrive under his watch.”
Rivas had four goals and eleven assists for Seattle U. last season. He was fourth in the nation in assists. Rivas will report to the Earthquakes on January 21.
