It’s been about six years since Ricky Esquibel won a radio promotion looking for someone who can become an MMA fighter. He is still at his craft. Esquibel was taking a friend to the contest on that fateful day, and ended up becoming involved in the competition himself, only to win.
He will enter the octagon for only his fourth pro fight June 2, when he faces Josh Ricci out of Whitesboro, New York. Ricci’s nickname is “Ruthless.” Maybe it’s because he likes to pick his opponents up and slam them on the canvas.
Esquibel is well aware of that, and has seen someone’s toss game before.
“There was this one fight where this guy, he grabbed me,” said Esquibel. “He just like tossed me into the cage and that freaked me out, but I ended up winning the fight because, I mean, it’s not a lifting competition and that kind of how this opponent is. I know how not to get slammed. I am going to make sure that doesn’t happen.”
The fight will be in the 130-pound weight class. Both fighters are undefeated. Esquibel is 3-0 and his opponent is 4-0. The pressure will be on and Esquibel is ready for it.
“The nerves never go away,” said Esquibel. “But, that is what really surprises, how well I deal with things when the pressure is on.”
Jackson Wink Fight Night 3 is happening at Isleta Resort and Casino.
