New Mexico United tried to make a statement. The USL Championship expansion team took on Western Division leader Portland Timbers 2 in Albuquerque Friday night and finished with a 3 all tie.
The night started very well for the United in front of a new record crowd of 12,921. United forward Kevaughn Frater dazzled the home crowd by scoring the first goal of the match to put his team up 1-nil in the second half. Frater would put the United up 2-nil on a penalty kick off a handball in the box.
Portland not only tied the game at 2, but they also took a 3-2 lead. With under a minute to play Frater came to the rescue, scoring his third goal for the hat trick and the tie.
“Obviously it’s good to accumulate accolades and stuff like that, but the team is devastated,” said Frater. “We went up 2 nil, a draw in front of a sell out crowd it’s not acceptable man, we want to win.” New Mexico United is 3-1 with 5 ties.
They will host San Antonio FC May 5 at Isotopes Park. The game has a 5:05 pm start time.
