New Mexico and UNLV entered a late night Mountain West battle with unblemished conference records Tuesday night. It was Marvin Menzies and his Rebels who left with an 80-69 victory. The defeat for the Lobos came after a high of beating nationally ranked Nevada last weekend.
The Lobos got Corey Manigualt and Carlton Bragg going early in the first half lead 42-35 at the break. The two teams traded the lead for portions of the second half with UNLV running away in the final minutes. Kris Clyburn came alive for the Rebels, scoring a game-high 25 points.
At one point in the second half the Lobos were shooting a woeful 24 percent from the field. Four Lobos scored in double figures with Vance Jackson leading the way with 14. Carlton Bragg and Makuach Maluach scored 12 points each.
Bragg also had 7 rebounds. Corey Manigault had 5 rebounds along with 13 points, three steals and a block. The Lobos dropped to 8-7 with the loss and 2-1 in league play. UNLV improved to 8-6 with a 3-0 start in the Mountain West for the first time in 20 years.
The Lobos are at Colorado State Saturday. UNLV is at Air Force Wednesday.
