It has been ten months since Albuquerque’s own Matthew “Diamond Boy” Griego has been in the ring. Many factors prevented him from fighting, but the 8-0 professional boxer is now excited to get back to the swing of things on September 22.
Griego will fight Mexican boxer, Felipe Rivas, as the Co-Main Event at Buffalo Thunder Resort and Casino. Ring rust is a topic that is brought up a lot when a boxer hasn’t been in the ring, but Griego believes that won’t be a factor on the 22nd.
“I think that this is going to be one of my best performances. We are working on some new things in the gym, me and Fidel (Fidel Maldonado Jr.) of course, we have moved up to the next level we believe, and it’s going to show in this next fight”, said Matthew Griego.
Griego has been working a lot on his footwork and hopes to have that shine in his next bout. Griego has eight wins as a professional and seven of his wins have come by knockout. The super flyweight boxer definitely packs a punch, but he also hopes to show how high his boxing IQ is.
“I’d rather embarrass my opponent for 6 rounds than go out there and knock him out in one. I feel like if you beat him mentally its more of a beating, but we just go in there for the W. Go in there and adjust to what he’s doing and if the knockout comes ill land that shot that he won’t see”, said Griego.
