A controversial finish was a factor in the first meeting between New Mexico and Utah State. The second game between the two teams had no such ending and was a decisive 71-55 victory for the Utah State Aggies as they finished a sweep of the season series.
The Aggies showed why they are one of the top defensive teams in the Mountain West as they forced a sloppy Lobos offense into 18 turnovers in the game. Lobos leading scorer Anthony Mathis was a bright spot for his team as he finished the game with 20 points.
He was the only Lobo to finish in double figures. Neemias Queta led the way for the Aggies with a double double of 23 points and 10 rebounds. He also had three blocks. Sam Merrill and Diogo Brito finished with 13 points each in the win.
With the victory and Fresno State loss, Utah State has claimed sole possession of second place in the Mountain West with a 11-3 conference record and 21-6 overall mark. The Lobos dropped to 11-15 overall and 5-9 in league play. The Lobos will now get some time off before playing again Tuesday at San Jose State. Utah State is at Boise State Saturday.
