The first weekly honors for the season in Mountain West baseball go to the Lobos. Ray Birmingham’s New Mexico squad picked up Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week Monday. Lobos outfielder and slugger Jared Mang batted .545 over the weekend on his way to Mountain West Player of the Week honors.
Mang had a home run, two doubles, and 7 RBI with five runs scored through three of the four games at the tournament. Mang’s hot bat helped the Lobos put a scare into defending national champion Oregon State in their first game at the College Baseball Classic in Surprise, Arizona. After trailing most of the game the Beavers used a walk-off single to nip the Lobos 6-5.
The Lobos put together victories against nationally ranked Minnesota 11-1 and Gonzaga 6-4 before falling a second time to Oregon State 5-0 Monday. Nathaniel Garley was named Mountain West Pitcher of the Week.
The Eldorado High product struck out six, allowed three hits and one earned run in seven innings of work in the Lobos win over Minnesota. The Lobos will open the home portion of their season Friday when they host Niagra for a four-game series.
