The defending champions of NCAA Women’s Cross Country remains no. 1 in the latest coaches poll. Joe Franklin’s University of New Mexico Lobos picked up all 11 first place votes as they prepare to compete with other top teams in the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational this weekend.
The Lobos are led by defending NCAA individual champion Ednah Kurgat, who ran a record time over the six kilometer course in last year’s championship.
“Whenever you’re in a situation where you are a returning national champion comes a different level of expectation and internal pressure,” said UNM coach Joe Franklin. “So our job as coaches is to minimize that internal pressure and continue to enjoy the process of getting fit.”
The Lobos were followed in the coaches poll by Colorado, Stanford, Oregon and Boise State in the top five.
