A slow start would be the demise of the Lobo Football team in their homecoming game on Saturday afternoon against Liberty University. The Lobos would open up the scoring with a game-opening 19-yard touchdown run from Tyrone Owens in their opening drive, but from there Liberty would go on to score 42 points and the Lobos would only tack on a field goal.
A 42-10 deficit at half seemed like the Lobos were down for the count, but UNM would have a 2nd wind in the 2nd half and show a lot of fire. The Lobos went on to score 33 2nd half points and even cut the Liberty lead to 6 points in the 4th qtr (49-43), but a late 22-yard field goal from the flames would put it out of reach. The Lobos were unable to answer after that losing 52-43.
Tevaka Tuioti would leave this game in the 1st half and would not return, after hurting his non-throwing shoulder. Head Coach Bob Davie told the media after the game that Tuioti has suffered a fractured clavicle and will now have surgery on Monday. Davie says that Tevaka could be out for the season, but more info will be released on that on Monday. This is a big hit for the Lobos as Coltin Gerhart is still 2 weeks away from being healthy, so Sheriron Jones will be the starter and Trae Hall will be the backup.
Sheriron Jones would be back under center for the Lobos in this homecoming game though, and he would have himself a day. Jones finished with this stat line: 15 of 27 passing with 3 interceptions, 312 passing yards, and 4 TD’s. A huge 79-yard touchdown pass to Patrick Reed to start out the 2nd half was the cherry on top of his day.
Overall Liberty would lead in the passing department though as they racked up 472 yards compared to the Lobos 369. UNM would lead in total rushing yards and overall yards at the end of this game though, picking up 211 yards on the ground and finishing with 12 more total yards than Liberty with 580 on the day.
If UNM would have one this game it would have been the biggest comeback in school history, but they do fall short and now fall to 2-2 on the season. The Lobos will now move on to open conference play taking on UNLV at their place on Saturday at 2 p.m., that game will be shown on AT&T Sports Net.
