Lobo bats come alive, but not enough to avoid sweep against Oklahoma

Local Sports

Lobo Baseball had a tough time with the pitching of nationally ranked Oklahoma in their two-game series with the Sooners. The evidence surfaced once again in the series finale Wednesday. UNM trailed 8-0 heading into the home half of the 8th inning, but they would finally start to get hot at the plate in the bottom of the 8th.

UNM racked up 4 runs in the 7th, including a 3-run home run from Derek Marshall Jr. The Lobos would put up 2 more runs in the 8th, but that would be all.

“To get to Omaha you have to compete like that and the pitching we saw the past two days has been unbelievable,” said Lobos head coach Ray Birmingham. “So, we have to try and continue to get better.”

Oklahoma won 8-6. The loss for UNM is their 3rd straight and brings their overall record to 11-9 overall.

The Lobos will be back in Mountain West Conference play Friday. They will host a 3-game series with San Diego State. Game 1 of 3 will be on Friday evening at 6 p.m.
