Lobo baseball put the brakes on four game losing skid

Local Sports

Ray Birmingham and his University of New Mexico Lobos defeated UC Riverside Friday, 11-10. It was a much needed victory for a Lobo squad that came into the game losers in 7 of their last 8, which included a four-game losing streak.

Justin Slaten struck out ten batters over the course of five and two 3rd innings. He also gave up ten hits and six runs, five of them earned.

The Lobos jumped out to a 10-4 advantage after a seven-run 5th inning. That lead was wiped out by the 8th inning as Riverside tied the game at 10. In the bottom half of the inning Justin Witari, who went 3 of 4 at the plate, drove in what would be the game-winning RBI single for the Lobos. At the time, the Lobos had two outs. Witari drove in three runs for the game.

The Lobos and Riverside will play the rubber match of their three-game series Saturday. Game time is noon at Santa Ana Star Field.
