Hope Christian chasing a 7th consecutive state title in boys basketball

Hope Christian Basketball Coach Jim Murphy is going into his 37th season of coaching and it will be one unlike all of the others.

Murphy has a chance to break a state record with his team this season.

Hope is the defending champion in Class 4A basketball after winning the 6th title last season to tie with the Albuquerque Academy Chargers for consecutive championships.

If Hope wins a 7th straight title it will be a state record.

“You know we are kind of the New England Patriots, the New York Yankees of old where you know everybody kind of wants to see you get beat,” said Murphy. “So, I know we are going to face a lot of teams that definitely don’t want to see us repeat this year. But, you know, that’s our goal every year to get back to the state tournament and hopefully compete for a championship.”

Murphy has a solid core of players returning with two starting guards in the group. One of those starters is Isaiah Dockery who is well aware of what is on the line this season.

“Honestly we’re thinking about the first game,” said Dockery. “I don’t know. We’ve all had that pressure to win that 7th but, we got to take it game by game before we start skipping to state and all.” The first game listed on the Hope Christian schedule is against Volcano Vista December 6.
