It’s been a long time coming for Fern Spencer. The Tohatchi teacher and basketball coach is going into the NHSACA National Hall of Fame in Bismark, North Dakota.
“It’s a big honor for myself, for my community, and for my family,” said Spencer.
She has over 44 years of coaching and teaching. Spencer always stressed academics before athletics.
“Athletics teaches them what they need to know on the court as well as in life,” said Spencer. “My kids being successful, I think that is one of the things that they learned from me, but then they did it themselves. being a Native American you know, you have to take care of your own.”
Spencer found that out during her career when traveling to play other schools.
“They don’t want to get beat by a girl who is Native,” said Spencer. “We got called every name, my girls played through it. We got hit by rocks and stuff. Our bus, you know, there was that, that we had to deal with.”
The hall of fame induction ceremony is June 25.
