Emma Mesta Garcia struggled early in her final round at the New Mexico West Texas Amateur. The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley senior to-be, with the help of her boyfriend and caddy, was able to pull her game together and escape with a one stroke victory. It is her second consecutive win at the NMWT. Mesta-Garcia finished with a 16 over par score while flirting with losing it all.
Shannelle Tafoya of Santa Domingo and former St. Pius star Ashlee Garrett, who once led by two strokes in the final round, had a chance to catch Mesta Garcia down the stretch, but were unable to capitalize on the opportunity.
“Oh my God, I’m not going to lie to you,” said Mesta Garcia. “I felt pressure, but I was just like, ‘okay do it as if it was practice.’ My boyfriend, he was talking to me before, he’s like, ‘trust yourself, imagine you are just practicing and just keep going. Don’t focus on anything else.’ I was like, ‘okay.'”
The NMWT is a tournament within a tournament and Tafoya walked away with the Albuquerque Women’s City Golf Championship after defeating Garrett in a one hole playoff. They finished tied after the final round of the NMWT at 17 over par.
