Brian Mendoza is glad he didn’t walk away from boxing

Welterweight boxer Brian Mendoza is enjoying the sweet science again after knocking out Carlos Mohamad Rodriguez in the second round last Saturday. For Mendoza, who just recently signed a five year deal with Top Rank, it was his first fight in two years.

His career was in stall mode while living in Rio Rancho, so he moved to Las Vegas to train. Something had to happen for Mendoza because when his career was stagnant, he considered walking away from the sport. “It got kind of to that point where I couldn’t see the light at the end of the tunnel anymore,” said Mendoza. “I love what I do. It just sucked to be doing all the work and not being able to have fun and fight, the main thing. Now the perseverance paid off. That’s all I can really say.”

It sounds like relocating also paid off for the hard-hitting Mendoza. “The training in Vegas has been benefiting me like crazy,” said Mendoza. “It’s just so much talent. It’s the fight capital of the world. I run into legends and world champions on a daily basis almost.” At 17-0 with a new contract, the good times may just be getting started for Mendoza. He is eager for his next fight and he doesn’t plan on ducking anyone. “Whatever I can get I’m ready to go,” said Mendoza. Whoever is in my way I’m taking them out. You can expect a lot more flashy performances like that last one.”
