Boys state tournament high school basketball serves up a few upsets

Some games went according to plan. The top seed in Class 5A, Volcano Vista got 14 points from Cesar Madrid in a 65-60 victory over the 8 seed Hobbs. The Eagles were led by Brundon Petiitt who also finished with 14 points. With the victory Volcano Vista earned a semifinal date against the Santa Fe Demons. The Demons outlasted the Eldorado Eagles 64-58.

Antonio Lovato scored 18 points for the Demons. It was there pressure that was a difference in the game. The Demons forced Eldorado into 20 turnovers and will now face Volcano Vista at 4:45 p.m. Thursday. On the other side of the Class 5A Bracket Rio Rancho and defending big school champion Atrisco Heritage got together. Joziah Ramos scored 15 first half points, but his teammate Dominic Rivas may have been the x factor. He surprised the Rio Rancho with 25 big points.

The victory earned Atrisco a date against the Cleveland Storm in the semifinals. The Storm got 18 points each from Aamer Muhammad and Josh Tarry in a 84 to 52 victory over the Onate Knights. The Storm and Atrisco Heritage have a 8:15 p.m. start time Thursday night. In Class 4A the Los Lunas Tigers put themselves in position to win another championship.

The Tigers got 18 points from Darius Haywood in a 66 to 46 win over Taos. That set up a semifinal date against the Del Norte Knights. The Knights upset the Gallup Bengals 55-49. They will now face Los Lunas at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

Hope Christian coach Jim Murphy saw his attempt to get a state record seventh consecutive title derailed in the quarterfinals. The Valley Vikings stunned the Huskies with a 61-57 victory. Derick Chavez scored 18 points for the Vikings in the win. They will play the Silver Colts in the semifinals Thursday at 3 p.m..
