Bob Davie plans to be in Lobo cherry and silver in 2019

The 2018 football season did not turn out how Bob Davie and his Lobos envisioned it. With one game to play, the Lobos find themselves carrying a 3-8 record that includes a six-game losing streak. Fans have started to lose interest in the team with attendance on a steady decline. Some fans have criticized Davie for the problems of the football program.

No matter how hot his seat gets, Davie will more than likely be safe to finish out his contract at New Mexico which runs through the 2021 season.

“As far as me, absolutely I plan on being back here next year and absolutely I think I’m the best guy for the job,” said Davie.

When asked if his coaching staff would stay intact Davie said it was a tough question and not really the time to talk about it.

“Do I like our coaching staff? Absolutely. Do I appreciate what they have been through? Absolutely, 100 percent,” said Davie.

New Mexico’s financially strapped athletic department cannot afford the more than half of million dollars it would have to pay if they terminated Davie’s deal. Davie has had some success at New Mexico in his seven years.

He led the team to back to back bowl games, winning a New Mexico Bowl title in a nine-win 2016 season. The last two seasons have been tough. The Lobos ended 2017 on a seven-game losing streak and are dangerously close to a repeat in 2018.

The Lobos need to avoid a loss to Wyoming Saturday to avoid the same fate the program saw in 2017. Off the field, issues have also been unkind to the Lobos. Davie served a 30 game suspension and missed spring football prior to the 2018 season.

The suspension was due to allegations of racially charged comments and allegations of interfering with a rape investigation. Just recently Davie had to suspend linebacker Evahelotu Tohi in October for allegedly assaulting a teammate. It all made the program look bad in the eyes of some fans.
