Lobos senior guard Cherise Beynon obviously was not ready for her season to end in round one of the WNIT Thursday night. Beynon scored 33 points to help the Lobos beat St. Mary’s 82-80 and advance to the round of 32 where they will face Rice University.
The Lobos will host at Dreamstyle Arena Tuesday night at 7 pm. St. Mary’s proved to be a tough out for the Lobos. The Lobos led 40-30 at halftime. Their lead evaporated in the second half.
A late technical foul led to St. Mary’s gaining a one point lead after free throws. “We held our composure,” said Lobos coach Mike Bradbury. “You know we had plenty of opportunities to not and I thought they were great.”
The Lobos were able to overcome and close the game out with big three point buckets from Beynon and freshman guard N’Dea Flye. Flye had 8 points in the win. “You think its slipping away, but like I said we didn’t want to have another game like we did before,” said Beynon. “So, we stuck together and we were composed.”
Lobos center Jaisa Nunn had 16 points and 9 rebounds. Tesha Buck was the only other Lobo in double figures with 10 points. Madi Washington scored 8.
St. Mary’s was led in scoring by Stella Beck who had 29 points. With the victory the Lobos improved to 24-10 on the season. St. Mary’s end their season with 20 wins and 11 losses.
