Jason Sanders comes from a family where soccer is first, but football has served the family well. Sanders followed in his big brother’s footsteps in high school in California and kicked for the football team. He was hoping to get a scholarship and get his education paid.
The University of New Mexico gave Sanders that opportunity. He never thought it would lead to anything past that. Sanders now finds himself as a possible candidate for an NFL job. After a successful college career that saw finish among the best in the nation, Sanders is hoping to get the chance to make his mark on the next level.
He has worked out for the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets.
“I feel like my first workout with an NFL coach was a little nerve wracking,” said Sanders. “Just to see how it was going to be, how it was going to feel, but at the end of the day that was still my best workout.”
Sanders has other workouts scheduled before next the NFL Draft next month. He has an idea of what he needs to project as he tries to find an NFL home.
“I think I need to make it look like I am mature enough to handle the job,” said Sanders. “I think the hardest thing for an NFL coach is to make the change to a rookie kicker instead of having a veteran kicker.”
The NFL Draft is April 26-28. Sanders said he was told he could be a 7th round pick or free agent.
