Girls basketball quarterfinals produce a few upsets


It was business as usual for most top seeds, but the Girls State Tournament quarterfinals did serve up some upsets. The top seed in class 6A was not one of them. The Cibola Cougars handled their business with a 43-31 victory over Piedra Vista. Amaya Brown had 21 points in the win.

The Cougars will now meet Las Cruces in the semifinals Thursday. Las Cruces overcame a four point deficit in the closing seconds to shock Carlsbad 40-39. The Rio Rancho Rams upset the West Mesa Mustangs on the other side of the 6A bracket.

Kimarah Decker scored 14 points and pulled down 7 rebounds for Rio Rancho in the win. The victory earned the Rams a semifinal date with the Hobbs Eagles. In a battle of Eagles, Hobbs ended the season for Eldorado with a 58-41 win. Amaya Lewis had 18 points for the Eagles. In the ranks of Class 5A top seed Los Lunas advanced with a 51-32 victory over Alamogordo.

Ashley Blackwell had a game high 12 points in the win. Los Lunas will meet Kirtland Central in the semifinals Thursday. The Broncos upset St. Pius 46-42. Halee Gleason had 21 points in the win. Bloomfield defeated Espanola Valley 57-33 to move to a semifinal spot in the other side of the bracket. They will play Gallup next. Gallup beat Miyamura 61-52.
