The drama was high as state champions in girls basketball were decided at Dreamstyle Arena Friday. In Class 5A, top seed Los Lunas entered the fourth quarter trailing the number two seed Bloomfield. The Lady Tigers turned their game up a notch and took control of the game. Maya Trujillo scored 16 points for the Tigers in the 48-43 win.
The Class 4A game brought top seed Portales and Moriarty together. The two teams met three times during the season with Portales winning each time. The Rams made it a fourth time with a 50-39 victory.
Taylee Rippee was a force in the game with a double double of 23 points and 10 rebounds. Perhaps the most drama at Dreamstyle Arena Friday came from a Class 3A match up featuring the top seed Texico against number two Tohatchi.
A large pro Tohatchi crowd nearly willed their team to victory. Tohatchi came from behind to take a one-point 47-46 lead in the closing seconds of the game. Texico remained calm and raced down the court for the game winning bucket.
Maryelle Dickerman did more than score the game winning shot. She also finished the game with 20 points and 5 rebounds to help Texico claim the title. In Class 1A, the girls of Elida put the final touches on an eighth straight championship. Lacy Ferguson scored a game high 22 points to help Elida complete a 25-7 season with a blue trophy.
