Zoo’s unique Easter draws crowd

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – It’s not just humans who enjoy celebrating Easter. Albuquerque’s zoo animals got to join in too.

Zookeepers made paper mache eggs and special Easter-themed treats on Saturday before playing Easter Bunny and handing them out for the holiday. The event was called Easter Enrichment.

“We fill these little enrichment devices with some of their favorite snacks so we have raisins, we have some Cheerios, we have air-popped popcorn,” said Pamela Campbell, a primate zookeeper.

Crowds gathered early to watch the animals enjoy their Easter gifts.

“The animals obviously don’t know that it’s Easter” Campbell said. “But the public does.”

Allison Stansbury and her daughter were on hand to enjoy the festivities. The morning celebration became a longer trek.

“She said we have to see everything [in the zoo],” said Stansbury. “We are not allowed to skip anything.”
