FARMINGTON, N.M. (KRQE) – A world champion Native American dancer who danced at the Gathering of Nations has died.

Spike Draper, of Farmington, died Sunday in a horse-related accident. He was 39 years old.

Draper was a 15-time champion dancer at the annual powwow held in Albuquerque.

Officials of the Gathering of Nations were planning on presenting him with a formal invitation to serve as head male dancer next year. Now they plan on honoring his memory at next year’s event.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
