Women distract Albuquerque shopper, steal from her

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – An Albuquerque woman is warning people after a good deed ended with bad consequences.

It happened at the Whole Foods on Carlisle and Indian School.

The victim didn’t want to be identified but said she was shopping Friday afternoon when a lady asked her for help picking out the perfect avocado.

“She was dressed in kind of khaki style capris, a nice top, she had a purse, other groceries, I mean she didn’t look like anything out of the ordinary,” said the victim.

Wanting to be nice, she turned from her cart and offered a hand. She said things quickly turned strange.

“She grabbed one of the biggest avocados she could find, I think as maybe a distraction and handed it to me,” said the victim.

After that, the woman walked away. When the victim turned back to her cart, her wallet was gone.

The store played back the surveillance video for her, which showed quite the scam.

“In the moment when I turned to grab that from her, another woman snuck up behind me and grabbed my clutch out of my shopping cart,” said the victim.

Albuquerque police said it’s not unheard of for thieves to work in pairs.

The whole scam has left some people in Albuquerque wondering who they can trust.

“You want to help other people for sure and you want to trust them, but nowadays it’s impossible,” said one shopper.

As for the victim, she still can’t believe it was a good deed that got her.

“It doesn’t matter what people look like or appear to be, you probably just always have to be aware of your surroundings,” said the victim.
