Women accused of murdering mail carrier appear in court

News

The two women charged with the murder of a local mail carrier faced a judge for the first time Friday.

Alissa Bickett and Annie Rael are accused of killing Bickett’s mother-in-law, Marilyn Gandert, back in January after Gandert evicted them.

Gandert’s body was found burning on the mesa west of Rio Rancho.

According to court documents, she had 10 stab wounds to her back, head and neck, blunt force trauma injuries and broken ribs.

Investigators say evidence show she was murdered in the rental property back in January.

“To hear that these two were arrested, it’s been a long time waiting,” Gandert’s friend, Cecilia Ramirez, said.

The pair was arrested Thursday and charged with an open count of murder.

Friday, prosecutors asked to keep them both behind bars until trial, which will be decided later in district court.

Gandert’s grandson also lived in the home. He was questioned in the case early on, but at this point is not facing charges.

Police did say they are looking for other suspects.
