A local woman is trying to stop trials in the Sandias from being closed because of bear encounters.
She’s circulating a petition urging the Forest Service not to prevent people from enjoying the recreational area this summer.
Instead, the petition suggests keeping the trails open, and closing only picnic areas during periods of high bear activity since food attracts bears.
It also recommends signage to make sure trail users understand the risks.
Last year, the Forest Service closed parts of the forest during the late summer and early fall after a high number of human-bear encounters.
