Multiple fires were sparked by lightning around the Mt. Taylor Ranger District Sunday, July 29.
A strike sparked between Guadalupe Spring and the Mariposa Water Tank grew due to Monday’s weather conditions.
The Mariposa fire is burning in the Pinon, Juniper and Ponderosa Pine woodlands and is now at 894 acres in size and 15 percent contained.
There are 87 multi-agency firefighters on scene including NM State Forestry, NM-IWC Inmate Crews, Bernalillo, Sandoval and Valencia Counties, US Forest Service, BIA, BLM, Zuni, Ramah and Acoma Crews, Cities of Santa Fe, Carlsbad and Albuquerque.
Firefighters have contained the south side of the fire on private land up to the USFS boundary with direct handline construction and will continue to monitor for any hot spots near the line.
