The lightning-caused Cuarenta Fire, first reported September 9, 2018, is burning southwest of Cabezon Peak and is approximately 50-75 acres in size.

Smoke may be visible on US Route 550 and NM State Route 279 but is not expected to affect travel.

The fire is burning in Salado Canyon under steep difficult conditions in rough terrain and is being managed by a Type 4 Incident Commander. No high values are currently at risk within a 5-mile perimeter and the fire is being monitored to allow for ecological benefits.
