SANDOVAL COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) – A UNM employee who is also on the Planning and Zoning Commission for the Town of Bernalillo was caught on camera destroying watermelons at a grocery store.
The Snapchat app video was recorded and sent to KRQE News 13.
It shows a watermelon rolling down a grocery store’s beer aisle, leaving a trail of juice behind. Then the video shows a man named Joseph Moreno kissing a watermelon before dropping it onto a case of beer where it splits in half and makes another mess.
Moreno works for UNM West in Rio Rancho, coordinating college fairs at schools and encouraging teens to take dual-credit college courses while in high school. His online staff bio also says he works in finance and student services.
According to Town of Bernalillo records, Moreno was appointed to the town’s Planning and Zoning Commission on April 11 of this year.
KRQE News 13 reached out to the Town of Bernalillo, UNM and Moreno. The Town of Bernalillo confirmed that Moreno serves on the board, but said “no comment” to Moreno’s behavior.
UNM West CEO Wynn Goering said in a statement, “We certainly don’t condone the behavior displayed in the video but have confirmed the employee was not on duty when the incident occurred.”
Moreno also responded to KRQE News 13 in a statement saying, “I deeply regret the embarrassment this has brought to myself and the University. I was not drinking and am horrified at the appearance that I was in any way impaired at the time. I apologize to everyone involved.”
The tipster who sent the video to KRQE News 13 disputes Moreno’s claim that he was sober.
People in Bernalillo watched the video and called Moreno’s actions “immature.”
“I could understand if a child took it down and started doing that, but a grown man, doing what he’s doing,” one woman said.
“It’s amazing,” another woman said. “I would be the store manager and I’d have him pay for everything.”
