Video: Suspected thieves take bait car for a joy ride

Albuquerque police said a lot of car theft and burglaries have been happening around a hotel near the airport. So, they placed a bait car in one of the parking lots, and a couple of car thieves fell hook, line and sinker.

According to police, a lot of car thefts happen near the Extended Stay off International Avenue. So authorities placed a bait car near the hotel and a thief took the bait.

Police said video from inside the car shows the suspect, identified as Martin Erickson, hop in the car, fiddle with tools from his pockets, and tamper with the ignition.

Later on, Erickson was in the passenger seat with an unidentified person taking the car for a joy ride. Erickson even grabbed what looked like a fast food hamburger for a snack. A few minutes later, Erickson was back in the driver’s seat and a new buddy, who police identified as Jonathan Torres, hopped in.

“What’s happening, dog (inaudible)?” said Erickson in the video.

However, their joy ride came to a stop after a few minutes.

“This f***** won’t start (inaudible),” said Erickson in the video.

Police tracked the criminals to the Isleta Resort and Casino and were able to disable the car.

“You have nowhere to go,” said police in the video.

As police closed in, Erickson called for help.

“Hey! What’s up? What do you want me to do?” Erickson asked hurriedly over the phone in the video. “The casino? Pick me up at the far south side! The far south side! Hurry, hurry hurry! Hurry, dog. The far south side! Hurry dog, hurry, please! Come fast, come fast! They’re already here, they’re here!”

When the bait car came to a stop, Erickson made a run for it and Torres jumped out the window, but their run from police was short lived. The complaint said Erickson threw burglary tools away during his flee, and they were even tased when they tried to run. They were arrested soon after.

Police said since that arrest in March, they still get notifications that their bait cars have been activated all across town.

As for the suspects, Erickson pleaded not guilty and Torres will have his arraignment hearing soon.
