ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Driving drunk is a bad idea. Driving drunk through the city without lights on because you think it’s funny is a really bad idea. But hitting a cop car to top it off, enough said.
“I was driving and all of a sudden I see a flash. My windshield’s busted and cracked. I didn’t see s***,” said _____
An Albuquerque police officer was patrolling the streets looking for danger at three in the morning, when danger found him. Watch the video above.
“You good?” asked a fellow officer to another.
“I’m good man. I was driving northbound, he was coming this way just blacked out,” said Officer Chavez, who was hit.
The officer was T-boned by a suspected drunk driver running red lights and stop signs at 70 miles an hour without his lights on, on 4th Street near Mountain, because he thought it was funny.
Joe Herron, that suspected drunk driver, says speeding around with no lights is a game he and his friends play.
“Why in the h*** would you turn off your lights, though, being funny?” asked one officer.

“Cause I was just, I was all, too drunk I guess,” said Herron.
Officers survey the damage, the cop car is in bad shape, Herron’s car is totaled and the iron fence at a nearby business is in pieces.
Herron then hears what happened.
“You hit a cop car, dude,” said the officer.
“Is he alright?” asked Herron.
“Yeah, he’s probably going to be okay,” said the fellow officer.
And then complains that he thinks he broke his neck.
“I hope nothing’s cracked right here,” Herron says.
That gets him a trip to the hospital, where he’s read his rights and given a trash can so he doesn’t make any more of a mess for Albuquerque police to clean up.
Herron was arrested for DWI, reckless driving and driving on a suspended license. The 33-year-old already has at least two DWI convictions.
