UNM suspends Football Coach Bob Davie

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The University of New Mexico has suspended football coach Bob Davie after multiple investigations.

The accusations against Lobo Football Coach Bob Davie are shocking and wide-ranging, from claims that he’s used the “n-word” to obstructing a rape investigation involving one of his players. Now he’s facing a 30-day suspension.

Former players stepped forward prompting the investigations. Documents reveal Davie is accused of trying to cover up a rape and other crimes, and making racist comments.

In the first investigation, graduating football players went to faculty in May, saying Coach Davie would make racist comments including using the “n-word.” They also say he told African American players sitting on a golf cart at football camp, “What are you doing on a white man’s tractor?” and saying, “Isn’t golf a white man’s sport?”

They also say Davie would grab players by the neck during halftime when the team was losing.

The university hired an independent investigator this fall after another player came forward. The report says when a player was accused of rape Davie held a team meeting and told players to “get some dirt on this whore.”

Investigators also looked into Davie’s handling of a domestic violence claim against a player and claims that one of the players broke into his teammate’s apartment.

New Athletic Director Eddie Nunez held a news conference Thursday afternoon.

“We need to make sure our department is doing everything to provide our student-athletes — and not only our student-athletes, staff, coaches, everyone — the means and method to be able to do things that are necessary for our department to move forward,” Nunez said.

UNM has placed Davie on unpaid leave for 30 days and says he will have to take mandatory training, including on cultural sensitivity.

Davie makes more than $800,000 a year.Read the full statement issued Thursday by UNM Interim President Chaouki Abdallah, here.
