ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE)- The goal is the same as it always is for UNM Soccer in 2016: win a national title.
It’s been three years since the Lobos have been in the NCAA tournament since that 2013 team that made it to the final four. The overall mentality of this Lobo soccer squad is that they are hungry and feel more experienced in 2016.
“There is big expectations as is always. I feel the pressure to win, being in my senior year, you know I want to leave a good legacy behind, I want to leave on a great season. As long as we stay true to who we are I think the sky is the limit for us,” said Senior Midfielder Chris Wehan.
This team returns five seniors and feels that with their leadership and overall toughness this team will go far.
“These five seniors know what it takes, they want that responsibility, and I have a great deal of confidence in them,” said UNM Head Soccer Coach Jeremy Fishbein.
The Lobos get back their two top scorers in Chris Wehan and Niko Hansen. These two know each other so well on and off the pitch, it’s almost like they know where each other are going to be.
“It’s kind of an unspoken knowledge that we have with each other,” said Wehan. While this dynamic duo gets all the attention offensively because of preseason accolades and last year’s awards, but Niko believes this whole squad is tight and will do anything for one another. “We are definitely a unified team and we know each other and are really good friends and teammates, and I think that brings us. Chemistry brings us further than most teams”, said UNM Forward Niko Hansen.
Coach Fishbein also says expect some exciting games from this year’s Lobos, as they bring a lot to the table as a team offensively. “We are going to bang in some goals, we are going to score a lot of goals this year, and I think we have a lot of versatility, there is just a lot of tools. There is going to be some guys fighting for playing time, which is good,” said Coach Fishbein.
The Lobos start out their 2016 regular season on 26th in South Bend, against Indiana at 3 p.m. The Lobos will host three exhibition games prior to the season opener though, starting out on Monday the 15th against UNLV. That game is at the UNM Soccer Complex and starts at 7 p.m.
