ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – A potentially deadly virus is spreading quickly in New Mexico. Doctors at the University of New Mexico Children’s Hospital say they are dealing with so many RSV patients some days they don’t have enough beds for them.
RSV is a very serious respiratory virus that hits infants especially hard. Staff at UNM has had so many patients it’s had to be creative in trying to expand the bed space. They’ve postponed some elective surgeries so that the recovery area can be used as a ward for RSV patients. Most of these patients need intensive care.
There is no vaccination for RSV and it’s common for adults to carry it and to pass it on to their infants, thinking it’s just a common cold. Doctors say if you have a very young infant and you see any sign of sickness, you should take them in to be checked out.
