University of New Mexico welcomes Garnett Stokes as new president

The University of New Mexico’s first female president took office Thursday.

Following her first meeting with the provost, President Garnett Stokes gave her first speech as president and promised to take the university to new heights.

“I promise that I will listen and that I will listen carefully, that I will be patient and have an open mind, and I’m making a commitment to make highly informed decisions that allow for input from the collective of this great institution,” Stokes said.

Stokes has a long history of leadership in public higher education and is an advocate for transforming the student experience by strengthening the university environment.
