Trial date set for Carlsbad murder suspect

CARLSBAD, N.M. (KRQE) – A trial date has been set for a Carlsbad man accused of murdering a former co-worker.

Austin Madrid, 22, is accused of beating Frederick Harris, 44, then dumping his body in a ditch and torching his car off Capitan Reef Road in October 2016.

Madrid claims he just stumbled upon the body, but there were several witnesses placing him there.

Police say Madrid was high on drugs. They call it a random act of violence.

Madrid’s trial is set for July 6.
