Tractor Brewing Co. to host inaugural ‘South by New Mex’

In three weeks, hundreds of musicians will start making their way to Austin for a huge music festival.

One local brewery is hoping to capitalize on that by making Albuquerque a destination, rather than just a flyover city for these groups.

South by Southwest Music Festival is a week in March where artists, industry professionals, and fans from all over the world, flock to Austin, Texas to feast their eyes and ears on the next wave of musical talent.

This year, more than 2,000 performers will be looking to get their big break. Many of these performers may pass through the Duke City as they make their way to, or from, Austin.

Instead of skipping over Albuquerque, Tractor Brewing Company is convincing them to stay and perform.

“We are trying to book as many touring musicians as possible,” said Jeremy Kinter, Events and Marketing Director, Tractor Brewing Co.

Tractor Brewing is holding its first ever “South by New Mex.”

“What we’re trying to do is showcase Albuquerque as a spot to come play rather than an afterthought,” said Kinter.

Throughout the month of March, Tractor Brewing booked 10 musicians to play at three of their locations.

“A lot of times these musicians don’t get gigs so well then they’re not going to come through Albuquerque,” said Kinter.

Their hope is that by giving artists a venue to perform, it will attract more musicians to the metro, which could help boost the local economy.

“I think this could help lift up our creative economy even a little bit and make us a destination,” said Kinter.

On top of that, Kinter says it’s also giving New Mexicans the chance to experience performances they may only see at other major festivals, like South by Southwest.

Organizers are hoping with the inaugural South by New Mex that other businesses will follow suit in welcoming these artists to Albuquerque.
